Agnesian HealthCare collaborates to offer sun-healthy soccer play

Soccer is one of the most-played sports by children in the nation. While soccer helps children stay healthy and active, it is also known that sun exposure early in life is the leading cause of skin cancer in adulthood. Since most sun damage occurs before the age of 18, prevention and protection are more important now than ever.

Recognizing the need to keep soccer fields safer for young players, Agnesian HealthCare has become the first provider in the state of Wisconsin to promote the Sun Safe Soccer program.

Led by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), Sun Safe Soccer aims to make soccer the most sun safe sport nationwide.  The program teaches soccer coaches the basics of sun protection and motivates these coaches to pass that knowledge on to their players and their parents.

“Agnesian HealthCare is a proud sponsor of Sun Safe Soccer in the Fond du Lac area and surrounding area,” says Burt Steffes, MD, a board-certified dermatologist with Agnesian HealthCare Dermatology & Skin Care Services. “The message - safety first, sunscreen then shin guards – is simple. This is what the Sun Safe Soccer program is all about.”

Sunscreen is just one step in “kicking” away the damaging effects of the sun’s rays. Finding adequate cover in the vast soccer field can sometimes be a challenge.

“We are delighted that Agnesian HealthCare has donated 10 pop-up tents that will provide the shelter and shade for our athletes during play,” says Renee Herrick, vice-president of Fond du Lac Soccer Association. “This provides an area for the players to cool down, cool off and cover up.”

Agnesian HealthCare and Safe Sun Soccer have a big goal in mind: give young players a healthier future by making sun protection a part of their lives, both on the field and off.
