Three Fond du Lac Phoenix Select League soccer teams took first place in recent end-of-season tournaments across the State. The U13 Girls Red team was the top finisher of the New Holstein Tournament, while the U14 Boys State Premier team and U16 Boys Red team were named champions of their age groups at the PCYS [Portage County Youth Soccer] Classic in Stevens Point.
The New Holstein Tournament was a one-day event held on June 17 that drew approximately 100 teams across 11 age groups. The Fond du Lac U13 girls won their first game with a final score of 5-0 over Niagara. Two first-half goals were scored by Sarai Draves. The second half included two goals from Gabby Born (assists from Ella Biertzer and Anna Riley), along with a goal from Anna Riley off an assist from Arden Johnson. With only five teams in their bracket, this win allowed the team to advance directly to the championship game against Kiel, where they won 3-1 with the first goal by Gabby Born (assist from Anna Riley) and remaining goals from Anna Riley (assist from Sophie Langille).
“I’m extremely proud of the way the team finished our championship game at New Holstein. We got scored on in the first five minutes, but like I saw all season, this team never gave up and regrouped to play team ball and came out with the victory,” commented Head Coach Jess Ruch. “I can’t say enough about the individual and team effort each girl brought all season!”
The PCYS Classic was a three-day event started June 16 with more than 110 teams competing. Fond du Lac had four teams participate, with the U14 and U16 boys taking home championship trophies, U12 boys finishing third, and U14 girls finishing fifth.
“Our U14 boys performed well on both sides of the ball,” said Head Coach Dave Moehn. “They held opponents to one goal, recorded three shutouts, and attacked well to score 35 goals over the four games of the tournament. Great effort by the entire team!”
The first game was a strong show of dominance, as the team shutout Rhinelander 11-0. The team defeated Stevens Point 10-1 in game two, and Marshfield 9-0 in game three. Carson Kelly opened the scoring in the championship game with three goals to give the Phoenix the advantage over the Neenah Rangers. The final score of this game was 5-0.
The U16 boys won their first game against the host team with a final score of 4-2. The second game against Kimberly ended in a 1-1 tie, resulting in a semi-final game against Wisconsin Rapids. Fond du Lac dominated this game with a shutout, 5-0 final score. The team then faced the Allouez Stampede, and again demonstrated their skill in a 3-1 victory.
“The leading scorer of the U16 team was Nathan Schmidt with three goals, but it was a total team effort that enabled us to be the best at this tournament. Ryan Pollack and Kalan Narance shared responsibilities in the goal,” said Craig Peltonen, U16 Head Coach and Fond du Lac Soccer Association Director of Coaching.
