Fond du Lac Phoenix Select Coach Dave Moehn was recently named Boys Competitive Coach of the Year by the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association (WYSA). This nomination-based merit is awarded to the one individual from across the State who best demonstrates exceptional commitment in four areas: sportsmanship, player development, personal coaching development, and community involvement. Moehn has coached 14 Recreational League teams since 1995 and 14 Select League teams since 2005. In just five years, he advanced players from a U11 developmental team to a State Premier ranking, and earned championship trophies at six different high-level tournaments - including the 2017 WYSA President's Cup. Moehn was nominated by Fond du Lac Phoenix U16 Boys Select Coach Craig Peltonen and parents Rick and Sara Gerritson.

"We have had the pleasure of observing the style of Coach Moehn over the last four years while our sons have played for him," wrote Rick and Sara Gerritson in their nomination letter. "Dave has taken our boys and taught them that a team is much stronger when they work together and support each other. He expects each player to put forth their best effort while not losing sight that they are still boys. He teaches them that good sportsmanship is the right thing to do and respect for the referee is a must... Over the years, the team members have changed, but the team has continued to have success. This can be attributed to Dave... Our sons are very fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from Coach, and we are honored to recommend him for Coach of the Year."

"Dave is a very dedicated coach to his players and their families - it's almost like he's adopted some of them. Some of his players and families were new to Select when they started, and Dave not only went the extra yard but the extra mile to make them feel welcome, walk them through the process, give rides to training and games, and do whatever he could to make the experience a positive one," commented Peltonen. "Where most coaches are required to train from March to June and August to October, Dave went way beyond this. His team played indoor, played futsal, and trained well beyond the Association's requirement. The players' development, to the level they are at now, would have never happened had it not been for Coach Moehn."

Thank you for this honor," said Moehn. "I have been fortunate to have had the support of the Fond du Lac Soccer Association throughout my years of coaching, and lucky to have had the opportunity to coach my son and daughter and many other great kids through the Recreational and Select Soccer Programs offered by our Club. I have also benefited from many supportive parents. I've enjoyed coaching soccer players in the Fond du Lac area, and hope to continue for many years!"
