Fond du Lac Soccer Association (FDLSA) recently awarded $250 scholarships to 5 of its past players: Blake Czyzewski, Shea-Lynn Gerred, Bradley Leach, Katerina Newman, and Abby Ruplinger. Eligibility for these scholarships requires having played on a FDLSA team for at least four years, though most spent many more years sporting Fondy jerseys.
Czyzewski has played soccer for the last 12 years. He started playing on FDLSA's Recreational League, and advanced to Select League as his interest in the sport grew. He also played soccer for all four years of high school, and hopes to play intramural in college. He will soon be representing the Wisconsin team at the Donosti Cup, taking place in San Sebastian, Spain July 7-13. Czyzewski graduated from Fond du Lac High School, and plans to study architecture at University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in the Fall.
Gerred has also spent 12 years playing soccer - 5 in Rec League, followed by Select League, as well as high school. She has also assisted the Club by volunteering for concessions and complex cleanup. Highlights of her soccer career include receiving First team All-Conference last year, The Golden Boot Award, and being named team captain. Gerred graduated from Fond du Lac High School, and will attend UW-Stevens Point to pursue a degree in biology. There she will continue to play soccer for the Pointers.
Leach, also a graduate of Fond du Lac High School, will begin his study of sports medicine and advance his soccer career to play as a Sabre at Marian University this Fall. Beyond his 12 years as a player for FDLSA's Rec and Select Leagues, Leach has also served as a referee for several years. He will join Czyzewski and other players on the Wisconsin International team at the Donosti Cup in Spain. Another athletic achievement for Leach was being recognized for the most assists his Sophomore year.
Newman began her soccer career in 2004, playing on FDLSA's Rec League through 2010. The next eight years she also played Select League. Beyond her own time on the pitch, she was a Club referee for approximately five years, volunteered as a Rec League coach, and helped with concessions and various volunteer positions for many years. Newman has participated in several sports, graduating from Fond du Lac High School with eight Varsity letters in soccer, tennis, and hockey. She plans to study psychology at UW-Milwaukee this Fall.
Ruplinger is a graduate of Campbellsport High School, and will soon attend UW-Eau Claire to pursue a degree in communication science and disorders. She hopes to join Eau Claire's club team while there. Ruplinger has played on FDLSA Select teams for approximately seven years; however, her love for soccer started in Eden when she was six years old. Ruplinger was a Varsity starter for all four years of high school, and was named sole captain her Senior year. She was named Freshman MVP and Varsity MVP. For the past three years, she's rallied players to join a co-ed FDLSA Rec League team.
"We're thrilled to award these scholarships to players who have been heavily involved with our Club for many years. We've had the pleasure of watching them grow as players and individuals," said FDLSA President Chad Collett. "We wish them the best of luck as they begin a new chapter in their lives. Their determination and willingness to work toward their dreams will continue to bring them success in life."
